About author: Ru-tee is a personal trainer, nutritional lifestyle coach and ex-adidas model. She also runs The Body Confidence Program, which promises to revolutionise the way you eat and to help you lose two dress sizes. Here she shares her love of protein smoothies and her top three recipes.

I love to have high protein breakfast smoothies as part of optimising body fat reduction and to help to balance my blood sugar levels. It also helps me to be in a good mood all day.

I like to use is unsweetened organic pea protein powder in my smoothies because it is suitable for people who are gluten, diary, and soy intolerant. You could also try pea and hemp as well. I try to avoid regular protein powders, as they have diary in them and often loads of other nasties including sugar, which doesn’t make them the best choice. Pea Protein is also a great alternative to soy and whey protein powders, for those who suffer from bloating.

Fruit based breakfast smoothies can lead to a blood sugar crash within 30 minutes after eating them, which is why adding protein is so important. As pea protein powder isn’t a complete protein, I like to add more protein to it, in the form of an egg or nut butter. I also like to use organic products wherever possible.

Why I love smoothies:

  1. The are so handy if you’re in a hurry and want to have something really nutritious for breakfast.
  2. If you are doing a workout first thing in the morning, they are ideal pre or post workout.
  3. Perfect for those who find it difficult to eat real food first thing in the morning.
  4. They can balance you blood sugar levels.
  5. They’re perfect for on the go snacking.
